How to Apply for Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY)

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) is one of the social welfare schemes launched by the Indian government in 2015. This scheme aims at providing a safe and permanent house to every Indian family. Through this scheme, the government provides interest subsidy on home loans under the Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme (CLSS) to applicants, which makes purchasing a house affordable.  

Types of PMAY Schemes:

The PMAY schemes are broadly classified into two categories: 

  1. PMAY- Gramin: This scheme is designed for applicants in rural areas and offers assistance to build a pucca house to families living in a kaccha house. Through this scheme, the applicant gets a subsidy on home loans as per the category he has applied for. 
  1. PMAY- Urban: This scheme is designed for individuals seeking affordable housing in urban areas. The primary aim of this scheme is to ensure that people living in cities, especially families from low and middle-income groups, have access to a pucca house with basic civic facilities such as sanitation, electricity, water supply, etc. 

Eligibility Criteria to Apply for PMAY Schemes: 

The eligibility criteria to apply for PMAY scheme are as follows: 

  1. There are four eligible income categories under the PMAY scheme, which are EWS, LIG, MIG-I, and MIG-II and the eligibility is determined based on the annual income of the applicant and their family category. 
  1. The applicant belonging to Economic Weaker Section (EWS) should not have a household income of more than Rs.3 lakh  
  1. The applicant belonging to Lower Income Group (LIG) should have a household income between Rs.3 lakh and Rs.6 lakh  
  1. The applicant belonging to Middle Income Group I (MIG I) should have a household income between Rs.6 lakh and Rs.12 lakh  
  1. The applicant belonging to Middle Income Group II (MIG II) should have a household income between Rs.12 lakh and Rs.18 lakh  
  1. To be eligible for the scheme, the applicant should not possess any pucca house anywhere across the country.  
  1. To prove eligibility, interested candidates must apply for the scheme through authorised sources and submit all the relevant documents along with the application form.  
  1. PMAY scheme has a defined validity period, and the eligible candidates must apply within the validity period to avail themselves of the benefits of the scheme.  
  1. The interest subsidy on home loans can be availed under PMAY-CLSS for buying or constructing new houses, and the amount of subsidy will vary depending on the income category.  
  1. The maximum limit defined under the scheme should always be more than the loan amount approved for purchase or construction of a house.  
  1. Property location under the PMAY scheme is applicable for both urban and rural areas that also impact the benefits under the scheme and eligibility.  
  1. Based on the income category, the carpet area of the house constructed or purchased should be within the defined limits.  
  1. To avail subsidies, married couples can apply for PMAY together if they fulfil the eligibility criteria.

You need to submit the following documents to apply for this scheme: 

  1. Identity Proof: Aadhaar card, Government ID card, PAN card, etc. 
  1. Address Proof: Ration card, Utility bill, Rent agreement, etc.  
  1. Income Proof: Bank Statements, Salary slips, etc. 
  1. Property Documents: Property registration documents, Sale deed, etc. 
  1. Bank Details: Bank passbook, account number, etc.

How to Apply for Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) Online?

Follow the steps given below to apply for PMAY scheme online: 

Step 1: If you want to avail this scheme, you need to first check the category you belong to. There are multiple categories like Economically Weaker Section (EWS), Low Income Group (LIG), or Middle-Income Group (MIG). 

Step 2: Visit the official PMAY website. 

Step 3: On the homepage, click on the main menu, select the option ‘Citizen Assessment’. 

Step 4: Choose the ‘Applicant Category’. 

Step 5: You will have to provide all the details like Aadhaar card number, personal details, address, bank account details, etc. 

Step 6: Next, you will have to enter the Captcha code present on the screen. 

Step 7: Review all the information to ensure accuracy. 

Step 8: Submit the application. 

How to Apply for PMAY Scheme Offline?

You can apply for a PMAY scheme offline by visiting the nearest state government run service center and submitting the application form. You will have to pay a fee of Rs.25 plus taxes. Do note that private banks or centers do not accept PMAY offline applications.
